I'm a big fan of Khoury and while I respect him for trying to take the series in a new direction (let's face it, the Templars have been beat into the ground), I felt like this third book was not as good as the first two.

I think part of the reason for it is that the other two books were written entirely in third person whereas this one jumps between third and first. It was especially strange because one of the main characters, Sean Reilly, is now written in first person when he was not in the past. To suddenly have a character be written so differently in the middle of a series is kind of awkward. Plus, in general, I'm STILL not a fan of this increasing trend of swapping between first and third person. I find it jarring and it comes across to me as a lazy way of getting around the drawbacks of each POV type. Some of my favorite authors are succumbing to it and I'm disappointed because I feel like they are better than that.

I was also disappointed that it wasn't as historical as the first two books. In fact, apart from an opening scene set in the 18th century, there are pretty much no historical elements in the entire book. Aside from the main characters being the same, there is nothing to link this into the "Templar Series".

It was otherwise well written with a good plot, Khoury still knows how to bring a scene to life and the premise of the book, although not very historical, was still interesting. So while not my favorite from Khoury, it was still a good read.

If you are reading this book, you have likely been following this series since The Last Templar. If not, start there and read the entire series, there isnt a bad book in it. It reminds me a bit of DaVinci Code books by Dan Brown, but they are completely different. The author does a great job of setting a scene, then bouncing somewhere else in time to set the backdrop, and keeps the story riveting from start to end.
A story has a beginning, middle, and an end. This novel begin in an interesting page-turner way, and died in the middle. I tossed the book. I love this author, but he missed the mark with this book.
The author write exciting books that are hard to put down and this one does't disappoint. A different subject than the Templar books, but there plot is exciting. The last part of the book appears more hurried than one comes to expect from Khoury and some of the knotty elements are solved quicker tan expected from him. Perhaps he needed to finish more quickly. Still, the story line, characters, and pace were of high quality.
An enjoyable read especially for those who want to continue to follow the heroes of the Templar set.
For Petes sake,what a rook. Jungle on cover n exciting plot write up. A soapopera story of guy n girlfriends n bad guys. No jungle adventure. We are to get excited over some butcher drug guy. THEN comes the last part of the book. Outrageous treatment of a child! Double,double crosses n twisted minds. Bizarre drug uses.. I did not read authors other books n do not want to.
I was such a fan of the first two books in this series, at first I was skeptical, as this storyline varied significantly from that. The main characters are deep and developed enough that the story was still excellent even without the strong historical pull. In my opinion, start from book one in the series. The development of the characters makes this such an enjoyable ride.
This is the third book in Khoury's Templar series, and if I'm not mistaken it might be the first one written in the first person style, as told by Sean Reilly. It took me a little getting used too but after adjusting it was a typical Khoury novel. As is sometimes the problem, he wraps things up very quickly in the last few chapters, with a lot of questions and answers coming in the last 40 pages or so. I love Khourys first three books and will continue on to book four, Rasputins Shadow soon...hopefully we'll get back to the Templar theme as that isn't addressed at all in this volume.
